“Welcome Under the Table”
By choosing a museum as her subject matter the artist explores its mission to set both actual dimensions and symbolic meanings to artworks and artists, to put them in the context of art history. The museum is sensitive to superiority ranking like no other cultural institution: the elders know best what the youngsters shall do. Welcoming the viewers “under the table”, Galkina literally demonstrates the difference between greatness and largeness. An English idiom “be knee-high to a grasshopper” has a Russian analog: “to walk under the table”. By literally doing so, a person is allowed to the world where adult conversations are heard in a different way, and where the things that were rated so high in childhood re-acquire their significance.
“Alexandra Galkina’s project at the Tretyakov Gallery could have become a legal and quite predictable intervention of an independent young artist to a space of high institutional rank. But her project “Welcome Under the Table” is not that predictable. It looks like a collective provocation accomplished by both the artist and the museum. At the entrance to the gallery, Sasha Galkina places an outlined Alice in Wonderland-ish construction. Perfectly visible from all museum floors, it turns the Tretyakov Gallery space with all its current exhibitions into a giant total installation. And thus an alternative scaling mechanism is been launched when such common notions as ‘top’ and ‘bottom’, ‘above’ and ‘below’, ‘low’ and ‘high’, ‘large’ and ‘small’ lose their usual meaning. It seems that now the action of this artful mechanism can be found not only in Kabakovs's ‘Where is Our Place?’ similar project. It is found everywhere, in every exhibition now displayed in the halls of the Tretyakov Gallery on Krymsky Val, and in the works of the artist herself,” said art critic Ludmila Bredikhina.

Выставка Александры Галкиной «Прошу под стол»,— проект, организованный совместно с компанией Smart Art и Третьяковской галерей. В центре инсталляции — уставленный посудой стол, между ножками которого может свободно пройти человек. Под столом — ноги невидимых великанов, чье присутствие подчеркивают звуки голосов и звон обеденных приборов. На соседней стене — картины и рисунки, основанные на личной биографии художника, часть которых выполнена на обоях советского времени, напоминая об оставляемых повсюду детских каракулях.
Размышляя о музее, Александра Галкина выделяет задачу масштабировать, задавать символическую величину произведениям и авторам, вписывая их в историю искусства, потому что здесь острее, чем в любом другом культурном пространстве, чувствуется иерархия старшинства: старшие лучше знают, что делать младшим. Именно эта парадигма и осмысляется в работе, представленной на выставке.
Приглашая зрителей «под стол», Галкина буквально демонстрирует разницу между величием и физической величиной. Она увеличивает бытовые вещи до гигантского размера — как будто в руках мастера оказалась волшебная палочка, преображающая находящиеся рядом предметы. Но, делая привычное невообразимо большим, художник не преследует цели вызвать у посетителя головокружение от масштабности объектов. Галкина не старается выглядеть демиургом, наслаждающимся властью над зрителями, которые оказались в положении Гулливера в стране великанов. Гигантские бытовые предметы делают человека маленьким, но не ничтожным. Пройдя «пешком под стол», он получает доступ в мир, где разговоры взрослых слышатся иначе, а так высоко ценившиеся в детстве вещи вновь обретают значимость.
